At Kimball Modern, we’re drawn to the details that are often overlooked. We believe it’s the transitions between spaces and materials that make a design feel thoughtful and the execution that makes a space feel effortless.

Process

Every project is a true collaboration between architects, builders, craftspeople, and homeowners. Kimball Modern works alongside your full team to bring your vision to life. Here’s how the process unfolds.

01 Pre-design

Pre-design is about understanding you and your space from the inside out. We’ll take measurements, talk through how you like to live, and gather the details that anchor a thoughtful design direction.

02 Design and creative development

This is where ideas take shape. We explore layout, light, materials, and the rhythms of your daily life, developing spaces that inspire and concepts you wouldn’t expect.

04 Construction documents

Once the layouts and selections are aligned, we translate it into detailed CAD drawings and specifications your contractors can build from. Every note, dimension, and material callout supports a smooth, coordinated build where nothing is left to chance.

03 Fixture, finish, and furniture selection

We curate the textures, colors, fixtures, and finishes that bring your spaces to life. Each choice is considered for how it feels, functions, and connects to the bigger picture. Our relationships with trusted vendors help guide the decision making process.

05 Final Construction

During construction, we stay closely involved to make sure the design is executed with care. We collaborate with builders and craftspeople, review details on site, and help guide the project to a thoughtful, cohesive finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Full-service design includes everything from initial concepts to construction completion. We measure and document your space, design layouts, select fixtures and finishes, and create detailed drawings in CAD for your builder. Throughout construction, we stay involved, meeting with trades, checking in on progress, and helping to solve anything that comes up along the way.

  • Every project and every home is different. The cost of our services depends on your project’s unique scope, complexity, and pace. We’ll take time to talk through the details with you so that we can shape an estimate that reflects your home, your goals, and the level of support you need.

  • Sooner is always better. If you’re planning a major remodel or building a new home, it helps to bring the full team together at the start. Early collaboration creates a clear, unified vision and can help everyone minimize costly changes down the line. Like many designers, we book projects well in advance, so it’s best to reach out as soon as you can.

  • We love working with architects and see these as very complementary disciplines. Your architect is there to shape your structure; your designer focuses on how you’ll live in the space day to day. When we’re both engaged early, it often makes for a more cohesive and creative design. If you have an architect already, we’ll be sure to look at your scope of work to avoid any overlap.

  • When choosing a designer, there are three things to consider: portfolio, process, and personality. Begin with their past work and see if it resonates with you. Next, understand how they work. Consider the level of support your project requires and how the designer can meet it. Lastly, trust the personal connection. This is a long journey, and your home deserves a team you feel comfortable and connected with.
